Initial Considerations
Assess the papers condition before deciding on a storage method. Many times, circumstances require caution. Therefore, it is often advisable to consult with a conservator when in doubt. Before storage, remove such things as acidic cardboard mats. But to properly remove tapes or adhesives a conservator should be called in. Check for signs of mold and insect damage. Do not store an infested piece with others works of art. Planning to store artwork together in a box or folder? If so, separate any acidic pieces from those made with preservation quality materials. This will help prevent the migration of acids or other impurities. When storing a piece that is already framed and/or matted, consider reframing it if the package does not meet preservation standards.
